Cultivating Community Culture

Category: Culture & Traditions

Author: Justina Campbell, Resident Services Director

As Resident Services Director at Vitalia North Royalton, I am the energy and engagement designer of the community. My job description specifically states I am to be a “Culture Creator.” Each day, I work to set the perfect tone for our community events and resident engagements. Providing socialization opportunities in senior living is more than just playing the beloved game of bingo. Beyond the events, essential amenities, and daily care lies the heartbeat of every community – a culture that fosters connection, purpose, and a sense of belonging.

Each monthly calendar features events tailored to the residents’ interests, focusing on key programming elements: physical, cognitive, spiritual, sensory, and social. We always celebrate major holidays in a big way, incorporating traditions from various cultures based on our residents’ backgrounds. Unique to Vitalia North Royalton and Arrow Senior Living, each month we also celebrate several Arrow Traditions. These include focusing on Black History Month, Mom and Pop Small Business Day, Be Kind to Humankind Week, and so many more!

Fostering Belonging Through Cultural Traditions in Senior Living

I actively contribute to our community’s culture by curating magical moments that celebrate diversity and inclusion through our traditions. These traditions not only introduce us to a variety of cultural experiences but also create a welcoming atmosphere that embraces everyone. Whether we’re commemorating cultural festivals, exchanging stories and recipes from diverse backgrounds, or learning about each other’s customs, these connections strengthen our community’s fabric.

Each interaction adds depth to our collective understanding and respect for one another, fostering empathy and unity. Through these shared experiences, we build bridges that honor and celebrate the uniqueness of everyone, enriching our community with vibrant diversity.

In senior living, culture plays a pivotal role in fostering belonging and camaraderie among residents. Engaging in cultural traditions not only strengthens our bonds but also acknowledges and celebrates the rich life experiences of everyone. These traditions provide comfort, nostalgia, and opportunities for socialization, reminiscence, and learning. By honoring our collective heritage, we create inclusive spaces where older adults feel valued and respected, enhancing their well-being and quality of life. Ultimately, embracing culture in senior living ensures that every resident feels a sense of belonging and connection, enriching the community’s dynamics.

Every senior living community has its own culture built around the engagement and interactions of the residents. I am proud to set the stage for socialization and events for my residents as we continue building and expanding our culture at Vitalia North Royalton.
