HERstory: Honoring the Journey of Individuals Living with Dementia

Category: Memory Care

Author: Neiko Hughes-Taylor, Memory Care Director

Women’s History Month

HERstory serves as a tribute to the unique journey, experiences, and contributions of an individual living with dementia. Each HERstory carries a rich past of memories, relationships, and accomplishments that define their identity. As dementia progresses, memories begin to fade. Preserving and sharing these narratives become invaluable in honoring the person affected and maintaining their dignity. At Vitalia North Royalton, we believe in acknowledging and celebrating each individual’s life story. Through this approach, we affirm the inherent worth and complexity of those living with dementia. It allows us to transcend the limitations imposed by their condition.

Through storytelling, we bridge the gap between the past and the present. This fosters meaningful interactions and cultivates a sense of belonging for individuals living with dementia. By embracing their narratives with empathy and compassion, we counteract stigma, dispel misconceptions, and promote a culture of inclusivity and respect for individuals affected by dementia.

Below is a HERstory about one of the residents living in our Memory Care Neighborhood.

A past photo of Inga and George smiling in a car, ready for a day out in town.

Inga N. has lived nearly all her 90 years in Parma, OH. A daughter of German immigrants, she graduated from Parma Schaaf High School. A blind date with a past high school quarterback led to 51 years of marriage to George. After his service in the Korean War, they built their home in Parma. Inga worked as a secretary for Standard Oil Company until their first of four children was born.

The two were avid fishermen off the shores of Vermillion on their boat “Vitamin Sea.”  Inga received an Ohio Certificate for catching two “Fish Ohio.”  These large fish were mounted proudly in the basement for years. After retirement, they went on many trips to Florida as “snowbirds,” but Inga often returned to see those grandkids. She has ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Inga is known as a great bowler. She bowled with the Friday Night Owls for decades in North Royalton. Inga enjoys a good party, dancing, and drinking Crown Royal with Pepsi.  Her best friends are her sister, Rita, and her dog, Buttons.

Inga loves Luke Bryan and country music and has attended many concerts.  She likes to be busy, do some kidding around, and spend as much time as she can with family.

Sharing the life story of someone living with dementia is not just an act of preserving memories; it’s an embodiment of compassion, understanding, and respect. By embracing their past, we honor their journey and provide valuable insights into who they are beyond the constraints of their condition through HERstory.

Happy Inga with a beverage.
