Mental Health Awareness Month at VITALIA®

Category: Health & Wellness

Author: Jen Glaser, Wellness Director

Mental Health Awareness Month was originally celebrated in 1949. That was 73 years ago! The goals of the sponsoring organization, originally the National Committee for Mental Hygiene (now Mental Health America), were to improve attitudes toward mental health/illness, improve services for mental health clients, and promote mental health.

Older adults are often more at risk for depression as depression is misunderstood as a normal part of aging. While there are life changes that might contribute to depression in older adults, it’s important to realize depression doesn’t have to be a part of aging.

Potential signs of mental health distress in seniors may include a persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood, feelings of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness, irritability, restlessness, or having trouble sitting still. Older adults may also experience loss of interest in once pleasurable activities, including sex, decreased energy or fatigue, moving or talking more slowly and have difficulty concentrating.

It’s important to attend to mental health just like you would physical health as your mental health and physical health are important to each other. Being in a good mental state can keep you healthy and help prevent serious health conditions. A study found that positive psychological well-being can reduce the risks of heart attacks and strokes. On the other hand, poor mental health can lead to poor physical health, chronic disease, or harmful behaviors.

At Vitalia North Royalton Senior Living, North Royalton, Ohio, we understand depression is a treatable condition like diabetes or hypertension. Don’t settle for being depressed at any age! It is not a normal part of getting older. A primary care physician or mental health specialist can address chronic feelings of sadness.
