Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Steph Galioto, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. There is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships. There can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections and offer encouragement. They also provide peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one.

Their willingness to reach out matters. By sharing their experiences and inviting others into community life, they help turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at Vitalia North Royalton, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make. They help new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Welcoming Each Resident in Their Own Way

A successful move-in experience looks different for every resident and family. At Vitalia North Royalton, success means helping each resident feel at ease. It also means helping them feel welcomed as a new part of the community.

That support begins by meeting needs as they arise. It also means being present in the way each resident wants. Some residents appreciate frequent check-ins and introductions. Others need more time and space as they adjust. What matters most is helping them feel supported, respected, and never alone.

Resident Ambassadors and neighbors play an important role in that welcome. Residents are often eager to come alongside new faces. That may happen when someone moves in or visits for a first tour. The Sales Team also has residents ready to open their homes to guests. Others offer a friendly presence at a meal. These small moments show the heart of the community.

Becoming Part of the Neighborhood

One meaningful way residents welcome someone new is by inviting them into their circles. That may mean offering someone a seat at dinner. It may also mean inviting them to a favorite event. Sometimes, it means bringing them along to a program like beach volleyball. These invitations help new residents feel included in daily life.

One meaningful example involved a resident who had moved in only several months earlier. She noticed a brand-new resident who felt confused and anxious. Without being asked, she stepped in to help. She made sure the new resident found her apartment. She helped get her key working. Later, she accompanied her to the evening movies.

That moment reflects the special impact of peer support. Residents often respond quickly to other residents because they are peers and neighbors. Team members provide important care and support. Still, an invitation from a neighbor can carry a different kind of meaning. It says, “You are one of us now.”

Resident Ambassadors help shape the culture of Vitalia North Royalton. As the bedrock of the community, they know the ins and outs of daily life. They also serve as a voice between their peers and leadership. Their support helps create a place where new residents feel known. It helps them feel that good people are glad they came.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents. They help build the culture of our community. Through kindness, friendship, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days. The relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
