While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.

In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. As Culinary Director at Vitalia North Royalton, I believe one of the most meaningful parts of senior living culinary is the ongoing connection with residents. In a traditional restaurant, a guest may come in once and never return. In senior living, every resident is a regular.

That familiarity creates a different kind of dining experience. The culinary team gets to know what residents enjoy. They also hear their feedback and talk with them about food often. Those conversations help shape the meals, the service, and the overall experience.

Residents have also shown how important good food is at every stage of life. A meal can bring comfort, joy, and something to look forward to. It can also create conversation and help make an ordinary day feel special.

One favorite tradition is Candlelight Dinner. These events give the culinary team a chance to create something memorable. They also allow residents to enjoy a meal that feels special, thoughtful, and full of hospitality.

Creating Meals Worth Talking About

Success in this work takes a desire to improve with every service. It also takes flexibility. Not every meal or moment goes exactly as planned. The best culinary team members learn, adjust, and keep moving forward.

It is also important to expect the unexpected. Senior living dining can change quickly. Residents may have new preferences, special requests, or different needs from one day to the next. A successful culinary team listens, adapts, and keeps the resident experience at the center.

One moment that showed the impact of this work happened after the June Candlelight Dinner. The theme was casino night, and the meal featured lobster tails. Residents talked about that dinner for days afterward.

Hearing those conversations in the dining room was meaningful. It showed that the meal had become more than dinner. It had become a shared experience, a favorite memory, and something residents were excited to talk about together.

Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
