Senior living has certainly changed over the past decade. An industry that once provided very little hands-on care has blossomed into a wonderful option for older adults. It now provides varying levels of assistance with residents’ activities of daily living, while arranging many opportunities for socialization and community. I am fortunate to work for Arrow Senior Living leading the Vitalia Active Adult Community – North Royalton team. I would like to share a little about my journey to becoming a senior living leader.
I started working in senior living when I was 18 as a care partner. From there, I never looked back, knowing I wanted my career to be in some form of senior living. I’ve worked in almost all areas of the business from direct care to administration. My favorite part of the work has been and will always be the residents.
Being able to make someone’s day better keeps me in senior living. No matter if it’s a resident, their family or friend, or staff, being able to take part in their lives, to create our own family within the community, is rewarding. If I end my day knowing I’ve made at least one person laugh, smile, or had a positive impact, I feel it was a good day. We’re all here for a common goal, to make sure everyone has the best possible experience. I take great pride knowing we have the tools and abilities to achieve this.
I work for Arrow Senior Living because my personal values and Arrow’s core values align. We both believe we drive change in the world with kindness. We defend our resident’s dignity and are consistent. We both believe that we, as a community, can have fun and get the job done.
I see the industry getting bigger through expansion. We’re in the greatest generation years and will be approaching the baby boomers before we know it. Now is the time to broaden our horizons, amenities, technology, and services we provide to our residents while keeping the human element and attracting the best talent.
If someone is considering a career in senior living management, I would tell them, “Do it!” Just like any other profession it has its bad days along with its good days, but not every profession can bring you the gratification of this one. Being able to impact someone’s day makes a world of a difference to me.
Arrow Senior Living and I invite you to reach out and learn more about a career in senior living. Working in this industry can be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling. Whether you’re interested in caregiving, management, or another aspect of senior living, there are a wide variety of roles available that allow you to make a positive impact on the lives of older adults and their families.
