Category: Senior Living

Author: Melissa Schreiber, Director of Wellness

Each day we go through our lives making decisions, worrying about the future, or maybe having concern about our health. It is only natural that we experience both stress and anxiety in some form at some level. Stress is defined as any demand placed on your brain or physical body, while anxiety is specified as fear, worry, or unease. Although defined differently, they are connected and share the same symptoms. Most of us experience stress, anxiety, or both at some point, whether from work or our personal life.

At Vitalia Active Adult Community – North Royalton we are aware of proven techniques to help ease the symptoms of stress and anxiety, including lifestyle changes, such as exercise and diet. We also know unmanaged stress and anxiety can interfere with your daily life and affect your physical and mental health.

It’s very easy to feel stressed or anxious when working in healthcare. It is a very demanding yet rewarding career choice. When I am stressed or anxious, I feel as though my mind is racing and I have difficulty concentrating. Each person has different stress and anxiety triggers. Someone could feel stressed because they woke up late or they got stuck in traffic on their way to work. A stressful situation often leads to feelings of anxiety.

When your body senses a stressful situation, your nervous system goes into overdrive, releasing hormones that will trigger a fight or flight response. You may notice an increase in your heartrate, muscles tensing up, and you may start to sweat. If the body stays in this state for a long period of time it could lead to several serious health conditions like, depression, high blood pressure, an arrhythmia, heart disease, weight loss or gain, and several other serious conditions.

Exercising daily is a great option to relieve some of the stress that you may being feeling. The chemicals released from your brain while exercising can be very beneficial to your overall health. Drinking caffeine in moderation is also very important. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system which can increase feelings of stress and anxiety.

Some stress and anxiety are expected, but if you feel it becoming unmanageable and affecting your daily life, a healthcare professional can help you develop new coping skills.
