November 18, 2022
In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month, bringing the plight of those facing the diagnosis, and the need for a cure, to the forefront. Today, there are more than 6.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s Disease, and while research continues, a cure is yet to be identified. Arrow Senior Living is working to heighten awareness of Alzheimer’s disease during the month of November through discussion and education.
Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that affects different parts of the brain, resulting in a variety of symptoms. It is commonly thought that Alzheimer’s strictly results in memory loss, but it also results in behavior changes, as well as physical changes to the body.
Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s. Although there is no cure, scientists are working diligently to find one. There are medications that can help treat symptoms of Alzheimer’s and slow down the progression of the disease.
The best way for us to help individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, is to meet them in their reality. Each person is unique and must be treated that way. There is no “one-size fits all” in Alzheimer’s and dementia, so caregivers must adjust their actions for each person. That is why our engagement profiles in our Neighborhood is so important. Our engagement profiles give our caregivers a glimpse of each resident, what their interests are, and what their likes and dislikes may be.
Our residents with Alzheimer’s benefit from living in our Memory Care Neighborhood because we work to maintain every unique individual. We center care around each person and aid in creative ways to make our residents comfortable.
At Vitalia Active Adult Community – North Royalton we continue to increase our knowledge of Alzheimer’s through ongoing education, so we can better empower those living with the disease and help their families to better cope. Our Memory Care Neighborhoods maintain awareness of this disease, while offering engagement, safety, and comfort to our residents.
