As Resident Services Director at Vitalia North Royalton, I’ve seen how a strong sense of community transforms senior living from a place to stay into a place to thrive. Building connections among residents, team members, and the surrounding neighborhood is essential for fostering well-being, joy, and purpose.

Creating community begins with understanding what makes each resident feel valued and included. It means designing experiences that spark conversation, laughter, and shared memories. Whether it’s a small group gathering, a holiday celebration, an Act of Service, or a themed event, these moments strengthen relationships and help residents feel they truly belong.
From my perspective, every interaction offers a chance to weave the fabric of community. When residents feel connected, they enjoy their days more fully and experience the emotional and social benefits of genuine human connection.
To me, community in a senior living environment is more than living near one another. It is the intentional creation of a space where individuals engage with life, build meaningful relationships, and know they are always welcome.
Fostering connections is essential because no one is meant to navigate life alone. Our need for relationship does not fade with age. When we offer opportunities for engagement, we remind residents that they have someone to share joys and challenges with. At any stage of life, there is always room to form a new friendship.
A culture of inclusion shapes our work. Staff encourage participation, yet residents often become our strongest advocates. As a leader, I focus on cultivating conversations, designing meaningful programs, and bringing together individuals who enrich one another’s lives. This may happen through welcome ambassadors or by asking a resident to invite a neighbor to morning fitness classes.

I also strengthen our ties to the town through partnerships with local schools and businesses. Students visit for intergenerational activities, and residents visit nearby businesses to show appreciation and build positive relationships.
One of my favorite examples of community is our weekly happy hour. Memory Care residents join Assisted Living residents for food, music, and dancing. What began as a simple gathering has grown into a lively celebration. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen department heads doing the Electric Slide or a wheelchair-led conga line weaving through the dining room.
To help new residents feel welcome, I greet each person by name, especially those who have just moved in. Being recognized and welcomed right away creates a strong sense of belonging.

At the heart of our community, connections are everything. Every conversation, shared laugh, and meaningful interaction enriches the lives of our residents. As Resident Services Director at Vitalia North Royalton, I’ve seen how intentional connection can transform daily life — turning our building into a true home and creating moments residents and families will treasure.
By prioritizing relationships, engagement, and belonging, we’re not just planning events — we’re building a vibrant, supportive community where everyone can thrive. Ultimately, the connections we nurture make all the difference.
