Connection: Family Engagement

Category: Memory Care

Author: Marisol Amill, Memory Care Director

Family involvement in Memory Care is incredibly valuable and, at times, understandably complex. As dementia progresses for a loved one, families often face new emotions, uncertainty, and questions about how to stay connected in meaningful ways. At the same time, Memory Care teams can guide families toward involvement that enhances quality of life for both the resident and the family. As Memory Care Director of Vitalia North Royalton, I have seen how purposeful family involvement can go beyond traditional visits. With the right support, families can remain active participants in their loved one’s journey.

Creating Meaningful Moments Together

I create meaningful experiences that go beyond traditional visits by engaging residents and their families in purposeful, interactive moments. These may include sharing memories through photos and music, enjoying small celebrations, or joining hands-on events that encourage participation. Ongoing communication also plays an important role. Video messages and regular updates help families stay connected and reinforce a sense of support, connection, and value for residents.

I meet families where they are and recognize that many feel overwhelmed or uncertain, especially as dementia progresses. To help, I offer reassurance and suggest simple, meaningful ways to stay involved. Listening to music together, looking through photos, or simply being present can make a real difference. I also remind families that visits do not need to be perfect. Even small moments can create meaningful connection. This approach helps families feel more comfortable, confident, and connected to their loved one.

One example shows the impact of this approach. A resident had become withdrawn and agitated, and the family felt unsure about visiting. Through conversation, I learned he was from Massachusetts. During their next visit, the family focused on talking about Massachusetts. That helped the resident become calmer, more engaged, and able to smile again. It also increased the family’s confidence in visiting, and the resident’s overall mood improved.

Creating a Comfortable Path to Volunteering

Family members interested in volunteering in the neighborhood begin with a conversation about their comfort level and interests. From there, the team provides a brief orientation and completes any needed paperwork. Volunteers are then introduced gradually to opportunities such as assisting with events or spending time with residents. This process helps them feel supported, confident, and prepared for a positive experience.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to family engagement in Memory Care. With intention, empathy, and clear guidance, it can become one of the most impactful parts of a resident’s experience. When families feel supported, empowered, and invited into meaningful moments, the result is often deeper connection, improved well-being, and a stronger sense of community for everyone involved. Whether someone is a family member looking to stay involved or a care professional seeking new ideas, I hope these insights inspire thoughtful, compassionate engagement in every Memory Care neighborhood.
