My Words to Live By

Category: Senior Living

Author: Justin Roach, Executive Director

Each year, I select a Word of the Year to guide my personal and professional focus. As the Executive Director at Vitalia North Royalton in North Royalton, Ohio, the start of a new year is an opportunity to reset, refocus, and prepare for what lies ahead. Reflecting on 2024, I’m amazed at how much my Word of the Year influenced my journey and helped shape my approach to leadership and life.

2024: Striving for Balance

My Word of the Year for 2024 was balance. The goal was to create harmony between my professional and personal life—managing priorities, tackling projects, and finding time for relationships and self-care. Was it always perfect? No, and that’s okay. Balance wasn’t about achieving perfection but about striving for growth, resilience, and purpose, even when things didn’t go as planned.

Balance shaped how I made decisions, strengthened relationships, and reminded me to focus on the present moment. However, achieving balance often felt more like a wobbly dance than a steady state. Some days, I succeeded; other days, life presented challenges that made balance seem elusive. Even as I head into 2025, balance remains something I work on daily.

What I learned from balance is that it’s not just about juggling everything. It’s about being truly present in the moment. Multitasking through life without fully engaging doesn’t lead to fulfillment. Balance gave me the tools to navigate priorities, but I realized that presence is the mindset needed to make those moments meaningful.

2025: Embracing Presence

With these lessons in mind, my Word of the Year for 2025 is present. This word reminds me to focus on what’s right in front of me, fully engage with the people and tasks that matter most, and live in the moment. Presence encourages me to make every interaction and decision count, helping me build stronger connections and find greater purpose in each day.
